Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energy
The Energy Division develops and implements energy efficiency programs that are funded by the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE). Energy efficiency programs serve a dual purpose. First, they reduce the need to burn limited fossil fuels, thereby reducing the emissions of pollutants and gasses. Second, they reduce the cost of energy paid by consumers; therefore, allowing the savings to be spent in other areas of the economy. Information on Alabama energy usage is available from the DOE Energy Information Administration at http://tonto.eia.doe.gov/state/ .
The State Energy Program (SEP) involves a wide range of mandatory and optional measures targeted toward reducing energy consumption, increasing energy efficiency, and protecting the environment. Programs are conducted in the areas of building energy codes, industrial energy efficiency, energy education, renewable energy, performance contracting, and alternative transportation fuels. Information on the substantial positive impact of the State Energy Program is documented by the Oak Ridge National Laboratory.
